'Girls' - A New Series on HBO

I was invited to attend a "sneak peek" screening at Gallery M Squared (in the Heights) of a new comedy series for HBO titled "Girls," a post "Sex and the City" take on modern post graduate 20 somethings in New York City. I have to say this is a show that goes to the heart of the real raw deal of being single, being unsure, and being a girl in these recession weary times of a post modern age.
HBO describes the show as:
"Created by and starring Lena Dunham ("Tiny Furniture"), the show is a comic look at the assorted                                                       humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s. Dunham wrote and directed the pilot of the series, which she executive produces along with Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner.  The cast also includes Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Adam Driver and Zosia Mamet.  Episodes were shot in New York. The ten-episode season debuts in 2012."
And, according to advance reviews of the show, it is being touted as "brilliant" (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/bastard-machine/review-girls-lena-dunham-brilliant-HBO-298379"

I would have to agree.  Unlike 'Sex and the City,'  'Girls' is devoid of the dazzling technicolor backdrop of New York City and its sophisticated Prada clad characters who deliver zingy one-liners and insider winky winks to New York high society.  Rather 'Girls' strips away the glamour and Holly Golightly all-you-need-is Tiffany's outlook, and replaces the grim reality of being no-longer-a girl-not-yet-a-woman dilemma that the four main characters cope with daily.  Its a no holds barred barrage of conversation and imagery of casual sex, career uncertainty, keeping bankrupt dreams alive, paying rent, and a whole slew of other isms and anxiety that maintains a hilarious yet melancholy edge throughout.

The show premieres in April and if you, like me, are looking for a fresh, funny, totally entertaining new show to watch on TV, tune in to 'Girls.'  I will.

Cheers,
D. Bertrand
